Housing is one of the sectors most affected by the war in Ukraine, with\u00a0over US$50 billion<\/a>\u00a0of damage recorded since the invasion by the Russian Federation. In Kharkiv, Ukraine\u2019s second largest city, some 3,367 apartment buildings and 1,823 single apartment buildings have been destroyed and damaged, according to the City Council. In the Southern city of Mykolaiv, housing stock accounts for 77% of overall damage, according to a One Works assessment. The City Council of Zhotomyr, situated approximately 130 km west of Kyiv, reports over 300 residential buildings as damaged or destroyed.<\/p>\n

In response, the government of Estonia has started a capacity-building and cooperation programme for the reconstruction of residential areas in Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Zhytomyr. The project is supported by the\u00a0Estonian Center for International Development Cooperation<\/a>\u00a0(ESTDEV) and will be coordinated through the\u00a0Estonian Union of Cooperative Housing Associations\u00a0(EK\u00dcL) in Tallinn, Estonia, which hosts the UNECE Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Housing.<\/p>\n
