Conference “Sustainable Cities: New Challenges and Opportunitites for the Municipalities” took place in Sofia, Bulgaria this week. Habitat for Humanity organized the international conference to address aspects of the contemporary cities’ sustainable development in the context of the growing urbanization and the environmental problems of the modern urban areas. The forum provided a venue for discussion of better planning and management of the cities and present examples of good practices and innovations. The cross-cutting theme was the role of the local authorities in the sustainable development of cities and communities.
Chairman of the Estonian Union of Co-operative Housing Associations, Andres Jaadla, shared in his speech the experiences of the Union with training program development for housing managers, especially the work of the UN Charter Center in Tallinn and introduced some success stories as well as problems with reconstruction of multi-apartment housing stock in Estonia.
